TRICK TIPS

So you just started skating and you want to improve? Here are some tips to help you get better and master the basics of skateboarding:

OLLIE / POP-SHUVIT / FS 180 / KICKFLIP

THE OLLIE

The front side 180 is normally the first 180 people learn but some people prefer backside. The trick tip for this may come soon. A 180 is where the board spins 180 while your body does too. See if you are regular, you land the trick goofy. Simple!

1. Set your feet up in the position shown in the picture. This would be for a regular stance skater, so if you are goofy, switch it round. Sometimes it is good to put your front foot on with your toes almost hanging off. This helps the board stay under your feet.

2. To start the trick you should wind up your arms in the opposite way to which it will be spinning. This helps build up the momentum.

3. Next you should pop the board and let your arms and body rotate through. This should automatically turn the board at least half way. You should be guiding the board round with your front foot too.

4. If your board hasn't completed the full 180 land the board in a pivot fashion. This involves landing it in a kind of manual with your front foot on the front truck (which will soon become the back foot). This allows you to complete the 180 and ride away clean.

To help you get tricks like the pop-shuvit, watch your friends do it which always helps. Watch skate videos in slow motion and stuff too. The 180 is often the first trick people learn to do down gaps and stairs after the ollie.
